Situated in the beautiful Exmoor National Park, Tarr Steps is a shallow crossing of the River Barle that is an ideal place for paddling and playing in water. The river is lined with trees and banks and there is a large flat grassy area. The area is partially wheelchair accessible and a disabled car park is provided close to the river.
The river crossing is by an ancient clapper bridge made of huge stones. This place is suitable for paddling and dipping nets as long as the river is not swollen. Care is needed with small children. Other suggested activities include climbing, running, collecting stones and skimming.
There is a car park with public toilets and a pub right beside the river.
Approached via the B3223 from the direction of either Dulverton or Withypool. Well signposted
